Course description

The WAEC/NECO Accounting syllabus for SS1 to SS3 is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in financial principles, record keeping, and business decision-making skills. In SS1, students are introduced to the fundamentals of accounting, including the meaning and purpose of accounting, users of accounting information, basic accounting concepts and conventions, source documents, and the double-entry system. They learn how to prepare journals, ledgers, cash books, and simple trial balances. In SS2, the focus shifts to more structured financial records and adjustments. Students study bank reconciliation statements, control accounts, depreciation of fixed assets, provisions, accruals, prepayments, and correction of errors. They also begin preparing final accounts for sole traders, including the Trading, Profit and Loss Account and Statement of Financial Position. By SS3, students develop advanced skills in partnership accounts, company accounts (including shares and debentures), manufacturing accounts, incomplete records, accounts of non-profit organisations, public sector accounting, and interpretation of financial statements. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, analysis, and examination techniques. Overall, the syllabus prepares students for WAEC and NECO examinations while building practical accounting skills for business, entrepreneurship, and further studies in finance and related disciplines.
