The WAEC and NECO Biology course for Senior Secondary School students from SS1 to SS3 is designed to provide learners with a strong foundation in the principles of life sciences. The course introduces students to the study of living organisms, their structure and functions, their interactions with one another, and their relationships with the environment. It prepares students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by WAEC and NECO while also equipping them with essential scientific knowledge and skills for further studies in fields such as medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and biotechnology.

The course develops students’ understanding of key biological concepts including the characteristics of living things, cell organization, nutrition, transport systems, respiration, excretion, reproduction, growth, and regulation of body processes. Learners also study ecology, genetics, variation, evolution, conservation, and the impact of human activities on natural systems. Emphasis is placed on helping students understand how biological knowledge can be applied to improve health, food production, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life.

Practical work is an important component of the course. Students are trained to observe carefully, classify organisms, draw biological specimens accurately, conduct simple experiments, record data systematically, and interpret scientific results. These activities help learners develop critical thinking, problem solving skills, and confidence in scientific inquiry.

The course also promotes scientific attitudes such as curiosity, accuracy, objectivity, and respect for living things. By the end of the programme, students are expected to demonstrate sound theoretical understanding, practical competence, and the ability to apply biological principles to real world challenges and everyday situations.
